In 2022, LeadingAge California secured a substantial grant of over $25 million from the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) for the successful implementation of The Gateway-In Project© CNA & HHA. This initiative aimed to bolster the workforce pipeline by training and placing 2,700 Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides (HHAs) into the Home and Community-Based Services sites.

Considering the critical need for direct care workers in light of California's status as the state with the largest population of older adults, LeadingAge California developed a new grant to complement the achievements of The Gateway-In Project© CNA & HHA.

In 2023, LeadingAge California secured an additional grant from the California Department of Health Care Access and Information's Caring4Cal to facilitate the expansion of this project. This new grant, known as The Gateway-In Project© Expansion, aims to train an additional 380 Certified Nursing Assistants and 50 Home Health Aides for entry into the workforce.
